NEWS NOW | COLOMBO – The possibility for afternoon thundershowers is still high over the island.

Showers or thundershowers will occur over most provinces of the island, particularly after 2.00 p.m.

Showers will occur in Western and Southern provinces and in the Puttalam and Mannar districts during the morning too.

Heavy falls, about100 mm can be expected at some places, particularly in Central, Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces and in Ampara, Batticaloa, Galle, Matara and Polonnaruwa districts.

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in the Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces during the morning.

Temporary localized strong winds during thundershowers are expected and the public is requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by lightning.

Marine weather

Showers or thundershowers will occur in the sea areas around the island.

Heavy falls can be expected at some places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Hambanthota via Puttalam, Colombo and Galle.

Winds will be South-westerly in direction in the sea areas around the island and speed will be 25-35 kmph.

Wind speed can be increased up to 45kmph at times in the sea area extending from Puttalam to Mannar and the sea area extending from Pottuvil to Batticaloa.

Temporarily very strong gusty winds (up to 70-80 kmph) and rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.
