As a result of the eruption of Mount Merapi in Indonesia, 253 people were evacuated to temporary shelters.
Last night’s eruptions at Mount Merapi on the densely populated Java Island covered nearby settlements with ash.
Authorities said the volcano spewed hot ash clouds at least 7 times, and the rapids, a mixture of rock, lava, and gas, traveled up to 5 kilometers down the slopes.
Abdul Muhari, the spokesman for the National Disaster Prevention Agency, said that 253 people were evacuated to temporary shelters.
Stating that there was no loss of life in the explosions, the authorities warned the residents of the region to stay at least 7 kilometers away from the crater mouth and the danger posed by lava.
The last major eruption of Mount Merapi in 2010 caused the death of 347 people and the evacuation of 20,000 people.
