The body of Saminda Lakshan, who was shot dead by the police in Rambukkana, is being laid to rest at his residence in Rambukkana today.
Opposition leader Sajid Premadasa visited their home in Narambada and expressed his condolences and support for the family’s future.
Meanwhile, the funeral of Saminda Lakshan will take place tomorrow, April 23.
It is reported that the Inspector General of Police has requested the Defense Secretary to assist the three forces to maintain peace in the area till the end of the funeral.
Accordingly, the Armed Forces have been called in to maintain public order, including the Kegalle District, under Section 12 (1) of the Public Security Act.
Meanwhile, investigations and court proceedings into the police shooting that took place in Rambukkana on Tuesday (19) are still ongoing.
The corresponding (IGP) CD. Wickremaratne appeared before the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission today to record his confession regarding the incident.
During the investigation, the police chief told the commission that police had not been instructed to open fire on the protesters.
Also, a special police team appointed to probe the Rambukkana shooting incident handed over a report to the Kegalle Magistrate’s Court today.
Following the submission of the report in court this morning, it was revealed that four T-56 rifles and 35 bullets were used by the police during the incident.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Public Security told Parliament today that preliminary inquiries had revealed that Assistant Superintendent of Police CWC Dharmaratne and Senior Superintendent of Police KP Keerthiratne had been instructed to open fire to control the situation in Rambukkana on Tuesday (19).
