If Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa does not step down and form an interim government, a group of 40 independent parliamentarians will focus on supporting the opposition’s no-confidence motion, according to a Sinhala media report.
The Independent Parliamentary Committee has held several rounds of discussions with the National Unity Force.
The panel is reportedly considering forming a new interim government if the no-confidence motion is passed.
It also said the cabinet should be reduced to 20 members from the proposed caretaker government.
Meanwhile, following the formation of the interim government, a group of independent parliamentarians met with foreign ambassadors to seek help in resolving the crisis, and the Russian ambassador met last Thursday and the Chinese ambassador last Friday to discuss the matter.
The Independent Committee has said that a senior spokesman should support the no-confidence motion as the government has repeatedly responded to repeated calls by the group to step down from Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and form an interim government under a new prime minister.
