More than 2,000 unions will take part in a nationwide hartal and strike today against the government, according to the Coordinating Center for Trade Unions.
Its co-ordinator Ravi Kumudesh said the activities of several major unions, including health, postal, transport and education, would not take place.
Due to this, school activities will not take place today and teachers and principals will not come to the school today, said its general secretary Mahinda Jayasinghe.
Representatives of the unions of several essential service providers have met with the President.
They noted that some groups were going on strike in an attempt to embarrass the people in the name of narrow political interests.They added that they were not going to join in and would take all necessary steps to continue the service activities.
