The Palestine Liberation Organization announced that Israeli forces have killed 55 Palestinian journalists who have been working in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, and the blockaded Gaza and Israeli territories since 2000.

The murder of Shireen Abu Akleh, the experienced female reporter of Qatar-based Aljazeera television, while performing her duty during the raid by Israeli soldiers in Jenin city of the West Bank this morning, was met with a worldwide reaction.

In its social media post, the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) Public Diplomacy Unit stated that Israeli forces have killed 55 Palestinian journalists since 2000 and kept 16 Palestinian journalists in prison.

On the other hand, Israeli Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lior Haitat told Anadolu Agency (AA) that they would “examine the issue”.

Reporters Without Borders, in a report, pointed out that it is hazardous for Palestinian journalists to follow the protests in the country and noted that the press members were subjected to violations such as “detention, violence, damage to their equipment, trials, and cancellation of their accreditation” and that “Israeli soldiers were injured in the armed interventions”.

Murder of Aljazeera reporter Shireen Abu Akleh

Shireen Abu Akleh, the veteran field reporter for Qatar-based Aljazeera television, was killed by Israeli fire this morning as she followed the raid by Israeli soldiers on the Jenin Refugee Camp in the occupied West Bank this morning.

While she was doing her duty and while she was wearing a steel vest with “press” on it, he was shot by Israeli soldiers with live bullets and seriously injured in the head, Abu Akleh died.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health announced that Abu Akleh was shot in the head by Israeli soldiers. However, the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the army argued that there were signs that the Palestinian journalist died as a result of the Palestinians opening fire.

The 51-year-old journalist, one of the first generation field reporters of Aljazeera, has been working in the region for a long time to record Israel’s attacks on the Palestinian people in the occupied territories.

Born in 1971 in Jerusalem, Abu Akleh graduated from the Department of Journalism and Media at Yarmouk University in Jordan.

There were incidents between Palestinians and Israeli forces, who raided the Jenin Camp this morning and surrounded a Palestinian’s home to detain her.

Palestinian journalists were killed while watching protests

Palestinian journalists Yasir Murteca and Ahmed Abu Hussein were also killed on April 6, 2018, when they were following the “Great March of Return” protests on the blockaded Gaza Strip border, as a result of fire opened by Israeli soldiers.

Dozens of journalists, including Anadolu Agency (AA) cameraman Metin Yüksel Kaya and photojournalist Ali Cadallah, were injured when Israel intervened in the demonstrations with live bullets during the Great March of Return in the Gaza Strip. It was reported that some journalists lost their sight due to bullet fragments hitting their relatives.

Palestinian journalist Yusuf Abu Hussein was also killed at his home in an airstrike by the Israeli army in Gaza in May 2021.
