According to the Department of Immigration and Emigration, there has been a high demand for passports since the end of April.
The department’s media spokesperson Pumi Bandara said that it was not possible to issue passports for all the applications submitted on a daily basis.
He said a maximum of 2,500 passports would be issued through the one-day service.
Meanwhile, a maximum of 74,890 passports were issued in March this year. Also 50,000 passports were issued in January, February, April and May.
