In Pakistan, the early election debates flared up again after former Prime Minister Imran Khan won the midterm elections in Punjab province.
According to national media reports, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah said in a statement in Lahore that an early general election for the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) is among the options on the table, but the final decision will be taken by the coalition partners.
Sanaullah stated that whether the parliament is dissolved or not will be determined by the joint decision of the coalition parties.
Shahid Hakan Abbasi, former Prime Minister and prominent figure of the PML-N, also said in a television program that the current government will remain in office until August 17, 2023, and will not hold early elections.
Former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, former Pakistani President and Pakistan Peoples Party Co-Chair Asif Ali Zardari, and Islamic Ulema Society (JUI-F) leader Mevlana Fazlur Rehman made a phone call about the political situation in the country. During the meeting, the three names agreed that the detailed action plan for the political steps to be taken should be prepared in consultation with the coalition parties.
Blaming the government on Imran Khan
Pakistan Justice Movement (PTI) leader Imran Khan also accused the government of interfering in the midterm elections in Punjab.
Khan said he should resign, citing Election Commission Chairman Sikandar Sultan Raja’s work in favor of the PML-N.
Referring to the economic and political problems in the country, Han emphasized that the early general election is the only option to solve the country’s problems.
