Sri Lanka President Ranil Wickremesinghe has ordered to remove all taxes imposed on imported sanitary materials and finished products to get zero VAT, his office said.
“All duties imposed on imported raw material for domestically manufactured sanitary napkins waived off and the importers of finished sanitary napkins will get zero rate VAT benefit,” President’s Media Department said in a statement.
“President directs the authorities to pass the benefit to consumers.”
Sri Lanka’s teachers unions and opposition legislators have said school girls were absenting themselves as families prioritized food over other items.
Both domestic manufactured sanitary napkins and imports have been zero rated for value added tax.
Domestically made napkin pack of 10 is are expected to be reduced by around 50 to 60 rupees and the price of imported ones by around 18 to 19 percent, the statement said. (NewsNow)
