Important train services in remote areas are being cancelled for the first time in history, said Locomotive Engineering Operators’ Union Chairman K. A. U. Konthasinghe.
He told the media that important trains in Maho, Gal Oya, Trincomalee, and Batticaloa in the eastern zone had been affected due to a lack of staff, particularly in outlying places.
Konthasinghe said that 90 locomotive drivers in rank three of the railway services have not been elevated to rank two positions yet, making them unable to operate locomotives. There is also a delay in receiving confirmation for persons attached to the railway under a contract basis until the proper admissions take place.
