The Kalmunai High Court has granted bail to Abdul Cader Fathima Saadiah, the wife of Zahran Hashim, the main suspect behind the 2019 Easter Sunday Attacks.

On April 21, 2019, extremist militants opened fire and set off explosives at Sainthamaruthu in Kalmunai as security forces closed in to raid their safe house, five days into the coordinated bomb blasts that claimed the lives of 269 people, including 39 foreign nationals, and injuring over 500 others.

After the dust settled, authorities recovered 15 bodies, including six men, three women, and six children. Among the deceased were the father and brother of Zahran Hashim, while his wife and four-year-old daughter sustained minor injuries.

The decision to grant bail to the wife of one of the main suspects in the attacks has sparked controversy, with some arguing that it undermines the severity of the crime and could potentially jeopardize the ongoing investigations. Others have voiced concerns about the prolonged detention of individuals under the PTA without trial, leading to allegations of human rights violations.
