Indigenous Australian ‘national treasure’ dies aged 74 (PHOTOS)

The important Australian Aboriginal leader Yunupingu has reportedly passed away, according to international media.

According to accounts in foreign media, he was 74 years old when he passed away following a protracted illness. In the struggle for Australian Aboriginal property rights and constitutional recognition, Yunupingu is also regarded as an activist.

He received an Order of Australia medal in 1985 for his services to the Aboriginal community after being voted Australian of the Year in 1978. Yunupingu has been referred to as a “giant of the nation” by the Yothu Yindi Foundation, and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has praised him, calling him a “great leader and statesman.”
