Imran Khan, a former prime minister, claimed that the Pakistani government might “even violate the constitution” to thwart upcoming national elections.
“All opinion surveys indicate that the government will be thoroughly decimated, so they are terrified of losing the elections. In an exclusive interview with Al Jazeera conducted on Monday at his Lahore home, Khan stated that “they are just running scared of the election and they are even willing to violate the constitution.”
Khan, 72, gained significant political support the following day when the Supreme Court mandated that Pakistan’s most populous province, Punjab, conduct early assembly elections on May 14.
The highest court’s decision followed nearly a year of intense political drama that began with Khan losing a vote of confidence in parliament and being removed from office.
Khan and his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party immediately began a national campaign calling for immediate general elections, which the government repeatedly rejected. Khan was removed from office in April of last year.
Tonight after Isha prayers we will be celebrating Youm-i-Tashakur in over 75 cities across all 4 provinces. SC has stood with Constitution & put an end to Doctrine of Necessity, which is used in absence of Rule of Law. This is also a huge step forward towards Haqeeqi Azadi.
