After May 2023, the National Transport Commission (NTC) will no longer operate semi-luxury passenger bus services.

Director-General of NTC Nilan Miranda addressed the issue and noted an increase in the number of passenger complaints regarding semi-luxury buses.

“In accordance with the Transport Ministry’s instructions, we have chosen to convert the semi-luxury bus service into either a general service or a luxury service.”

Miranda claimed that the decision was communicated to all bus owners.

Nearly 430 semi-luxury buses are now in service, and the bus owners will be given the option to turn this service into a regular service or a luxury service without paying anything.

Therefore, it is anticipated that the changeover process will be finished by May 31.

Gemunu Wijeratne, the chairman of the Private Bus Owners’ Association, has expressed worry with the NTC’s choice.
