All District Returning Officers have published a Gazette notice informing the public that the 2023 Local Government (LG) election will not take place on April 25 as originally planned.

As a result, once the Treasury provides the necessary cash or the Supreme Court issues a ruling regarding the ongoing lawsuit, a new date will be announced.

Based on the funding situation or the relevant court order, whichever comes first, a date for the 2023 LG elections will be chosen.

The next election was initially planned for last year after the 2018 Local Government elections, which saw the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) win a majority of the seats.
