Türkiye’s elections: Polls close in some European countries

For the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections in Turkey, voting has concluded in the majority of European nations.

As of 9 p.m. local time (1900 GMT) on Sunday, voting stations at Turkish diplomatic posts in numerous European nations were closed.

Albania, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Kosovo, Lithuania, Malta, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland, as well as the United Kingdom, declared the voting to be closed.

However, voting will continue till Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. local time (07:00 GMT–18:00 GMT) in Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, and Luxembourg.

The Supreme Election Board (YSK) reports that as of Sunday, more than 1.6 million Turkish nationals who reside outside of Turkey had cast their votes for the country’s president and parliamentary representatives.

On Sunday, May 14, there will be voting in Turkey itself. The main opposition leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu, incumbent president Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Muharrem Ince, and Sinan Ogan are the other three candidates.

In the meanwhile, 151 independent candidates and 24 political parties are fighting for seats in the 600-member Turkish parliament.
