The temporary injunction prohibiting the arrest and recording of former Attorney General (AG) Dappula de Livera’s remarks over a remark on the Easter assaults of 2019 has been further extended until June 22, 2023.
After the Court of Appeal took up the appeal submitted by the previous Attorney General for review, the interim order was extended today.
The former attorney general states in his appeal that the Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) summoned him to provide a statement on a remark he made regarding the Easter Sunday assaults.
Dappula de Livera said that it would be a breach of the rights accorded to an AG for the Police to inquire into his actions while serving as the Attorney General.
Therefore, the former AG had asked the court to obtain a temporary injunction barring his summons and arrest in connection with the subject.
The court was notified by the Additional Solicitor General that the respondents to the lawsuit must provide statements within a month.
The Court set the matter for hearing on June 22, 2023 since the petitioner had not raised an objection to the request.
On April 19 and 21, 2023, the TID sent summonses on the former attorney general to record a statement he had given on the 2019 Easter Sunday assaults just days before his retirement.
Dappula de Livera was served with a summons by the TID on the direction of Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe to record a statement on his prior assertions that “there was a Grand Conspiracy with regard to the 2019 April Attacks.”
The previous Attorney General, however, ignored the summons and instead sent a seven-page letter of opposition on his behalf.
