Deep depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal is the subject of a “Red” warning from the Department of Meteorology, which is in place until noon tomorrow (May 11).

At 8:00 am today, the depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal had grown into a deep depression with its center located about 8.8°N and 88.9°E. The Met Department predicted that it will progressively strengthen into a cyclonic storm over the same area this evening.

The alert continued, “It will gradually strengthen into a severe cyclonic storm by tomorrow morning and a very severe cyclonic storm by midnight on May 11 over the adjoining southeast and central Bay of Bengal.”

On May 14, 2023, the system is most likely to travel approach the shores of Bangladesh and Myanmar.

In the next 24 hours, this system will cause wind speeds to range from 50 to 60 kph, with the potential to reach 70 to 80 kph in sea regions bordered by (03N – 20N) and (85E – 100E).

According to the Met. Department, above-sea locations may also see heavy rain or thundershowers and extremely turbulent waves.

Therefore, it is recommended that the fishing and naval communities refrain from going into the sea regions that are delimited by (03N – 20N) and (85E – 100E) until further notice.

Additionally, those who are out at the aforementioned sea regions are urged to return to the coasts or relocate immediately to safer areas, and the naval and fishing communities are urged to exercise caution when conducting fishing and naval operations in the sea regions off the coast that stretch from Galle to Pottuvil via Matara and Hambantota.

The fishing and naval communities are urged to pay close attention to any upcoming weather forecasts released by the Department of Meteorology.
