Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), the largest opposition group, has made the decision to file a lawsuit over the sinking of the X-Press Pearl ship.

Sajith Premadasa, the leader of the opposition SJB, stated that his party has launched legal action against the vessel’s management for the catastrophic environmental calamity that happened in Sri Lankan seas.

The appropriate parties have already received letters of demand, according to MP Premadasa, who spoke to the Parliament yesterday (11).

Sajith Premadasa, an MP, announced the choice and laid the pertinent paperwork before Parliament.

The X-Press Pearl freighter, which was transporting dangerous chemicals, caught fire in May 2021 off the coast of Colombo, sending some of its cargo overboard.

At the time, a variety of goods, including chemicals and plastic pellets, washed ashore throughout the Western Province coastal strip, drastically altering the ecosystem along the beach.

As a result of the vessel’s environmental contamination, the bodies of several marine animals, including turtles, dolphins, and whales, were also discovered washed up on the coast.

The Sri Lankan government is presently engaged in a legal battle to collect compensation for the losses brought on by the ship catastrophe.
