Today (16 May), the Cabinet of Ministers agreed an extension of the policy allowing migrant workers from Sri Lanka to import four-wheeled electric automobiles.

Therefore, even though it was originally decided to allow migrant workers to import electric vehicles worth 50% of the value of remittances they have sent to Sri Lanka through official channels from May 1, 2022, to December 31, 2022, this time period has now been extended until September 23, 2023.

As stated by Cabinet Spokesman Bandula Gunawardene during this morning’s Cabinet briefing, migrant workers will greatly benefit from this extension.

The Cabinet initially approved the scheme in October 2022 in an effort to persuade migrant workers to send their remittances through authorized channels, which would be advantageous to both them and the nation as a whole.
