Dr. Harsha de Silva, an opposition lawmaker, has emphasized the necessity of specific changes to direct Sri Lanka’s IMF program toward medium-term growth.

On Wednesday (17), MP Harsha de Silva spoke to the media and discussed several important concerns relating the IMF Program.

The MP for Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) expressed overall support for the stability plan but emphasized the need for particular changes to direct the plan’s attention toward medium-term growth.

The four-year plan established in the IMF Program was contested by MP de Silva. He emphasized that although the plan concentrates on stabilizing the economy, it falls short in addressing the post-stabilization phase, which is essential for raising the general population’s standard of living. He voiced dissatisfaction with the predicted GDP growth rate of only 3.0% by 2027 and emphasized the necessity for a considerably greater growth rate, ideally between 6-9%, to effectively alleviate people’s suffering and create enough job possibilities.

According to him, a future SJB administration will revise the agreement with the IMF’s assent to change the emphasis from stabilization (and debt sustainability through debt restructuring) to growth.
