Wasantha Mudalige, the convenor of the Inter-University Students’ Federation (IUSF), and the other seven student activists detained by the police on Thursday, May 18, will be brought before the Mahara Magistrate’s Court today, according to the police.
The arrests happened on Thursday night as a protest was being held close to the University of Kelaniya.
The university’s student union had planned the demonstration.
The police claim that the 08 student activists were detained for assaulting police officers at the protest location, disrupting their work, and acting riotously.
According to the police media division, two police officers who were hurt in the commotion are currently receiving medical attention at the Kiribathgoda Hospital.
The arrestees were given to the Ragama Police by the Kiribathgoda Police for further investigation.
