Mauricio Funes, the former president of El Salvador, has been given a 14-year prison term by a local court.
By finding him guilty of the counts of having relationships with criminal organizations and duty neglect.
His former Minister of Justice and Defense was also given an 18-year prison term, according to foreign media.
It was discovered that Funes, who held the office of President from 2009 to 2014, made links with gang members in order to achieve political advantage.
The former president is presently residing in Nicaragua, where he was granted citizenship in 2019.
El Salvador proclaimed a state of emergency about a year ago, and as a result, more than 68,000 people who were thought to be gang members were detained.
