Govt mulls amending labour laws

According to Saman Ratnapriya, director general of trade unions to the president, the presidential trade union relations division will call a special conference with all trade union leaders and the relevant authorities to discuss revising the labor legislation.

Ratnapriya stated at a media conference in Colombo that trade union input is crucial while drafting the appropriate Bill including the revisions.

“The labor laws in our nation are pretty dated. It has to be rewritten,” Ratnapriya said, noting that despite some minor adjustments, the labor legislation has not been completely updated to reflect contemporary demands.

The public and private sectors of the nation are governed by different labor regulations. This must be altered. He went on to emphasize the need of trade union engagement in the negotiations to reform the labor law: “The modifications should be done with the cooperation of respective parties concerned.
