The Bread Ordinance No. 13 of 1864, which governs the selling of bread and forbids the adulteration of bread offered for sale, has been chosen to be repealed in Sri Lanka.
The Cabinet of Ministers agreed to a motion put forth by Minister of Trade, Commerce, and Food Security Nalin Fernando to have the ordinance revoked at its meeting on Monday, June 12.
The government clarified the decision in a statement made in this respect, stating that it was made because certain parts of the Bread Ordinance do not align with the rules set forth in the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) Act No. 09 of 2003.
The government has concluded that the Bread Ordinance should no longer be in effect.
The Legal Draftsman was authorized by the Cabinet of Ministers to draft a bill to repeal the Bread Ordinance.
