The recent increase in incarceration-related fatalities and criminal activity in several regions of the country has caused the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) to express grave concern.
The group encouraged the government to enforce stronger regulations and punishments on wayward police personnel who abuse their authority and neglect their duties in a statement on behalf of other stakeholders and the government.
In order to stop the recurrence of custodial deaths—considered one of the worst crimes in a civilized society governed by the rule of law—the BASL demanded the development of enforceable rules.
The statement stressed the need for law enforcement officials to act swiftly to stop illegal behavior in order to protect the public.
