The Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) has opted to contract with the private sector to print roughly 800,000 driver’s licenses.
According to DMT Commissioner General Nishantha Anuruddha, the department’s inadequate printing equipment capacity has caused a several-month delay in the issue of driving licenses.
He said that the department has decided to outsource the printing to the private sector because it is now unable to invest Rs. 200 million on the procurement of a printing machine.
The DMT Commissioner General also disclosed that a deal had been reached to use the printing equipment at the private company that looks for the department’s computer network.
He further stated that the aforementioned private company had consented to print driver’s licenses for a fee of Rs. 150 each license card.
