Manusha Nanayakkara, the minister of labor and foreign employment, predicts that the national airline of South Korea, Korean Air, will resume direct flights to Sri Lanka.
The minister claims that the frequent flight delays of SriLankan Airlines are endangering the employment prospects of Sri Lankan workers who are expected to go for international employment.
This morning (June 21), Nanayakkara declared in a speech to the legislature that the South Korean Human Resource Institute only hires migrant workers who come in the nation on time; anyone who is late will not be accepted.
The SriLankan Airlines flight UL 470, which was supposed to depart for South Korea yesterday (June 20), has been delayed by almost 12 hours. The flight was carrying a number of migrant workers going to South Korea for jobs.
“This aircraft was mostly sent out to transport these workers who were headed to South Korea. It is mandatory on a national level.
Although the significance of this problem was emphasized to the appropriate airline officials, he said that they paid it no attention.
The South Korean Human Resource Institute informed the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) not to send the group due to the flight’s delay, therefore they were forced to postpone the group’s departure, the minister said.
