Zaka Ashraf, who appears to be in line to succeed Asif Ali Khan as chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), expressed his disapproval of the hybrid format that would be employed for this year’s edition, calling it a “injustice,” casting doubt once more on the future of cricket’s Asia Cup 2023.
After India declined to tour due to tense tensions between the two South Asian nations, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) approved Pakistan’s proposal for a hybrid Asia Cup.
According to the schedule, four games will be played in Pakistan, with the remaining nine being held in Sri Lanka.
In contrast, Ashraf said in a media interview on Wednesday in the Pakistani capital of Islamabad that he had “rejected the hybrid model [for the Asia Cup] in the past itself because I do not agree with it.”
He emphasized that while “major matches” will be played in Sri Lanka, “only minor teams like Nepal will play in Pakistan.”
He argued that Pakistan should host the entire event, the Asia Cup.
