The appointment of Professor Manjula Fernando to the position of Chairman of the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) has received confirmation from the National Constitutional Council.

In order to fill the position left open by the resignation of former PUCSL Chairman Janaka Ratanayake, Professor Manjula Fernando has been nominated.

After a proposal was discussed and approved by Parliament in May, Janaka Ratnayake was fired from his position as PUCSL Chairman.

In accordance with Section 7 of the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka Act, a motion in the parliament was filed against Janaka Ratnayake.

Ratnayake and Minister of Power and Energy Kanchana Wijesekera had a number of disagreements before the debate that covered a range of topics, including the length of power outages and modifications to electricity tariffs.
