Beggars would reportedly be transferred from Galle Face Green in Colombo to the Social Services Rehabilitation Center in Ridiyagama, Hambantota.
The decision was made, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Aviation in response to concerns about public harassment brought on by beggars at the Galle Face Green.
About 150 beggars at the Galle Face Green, including residents and foreign visitors, are allegedly causing annoyance to the people, according to Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva.
In order to oversee this collaborative effort, the Ministry has given the Sri Lanka Ports Authority and Sri Lanka Police instructions. The Ports Authority and affiliated institutions have also been given instructions to allocate funding for this project through the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs.
Additionally, according to Minister Nimal Siripala, the money would be used to pay for the beggars’ lodging, food, and other necessities once they are moved to the rehabilitation facility.
