The burning of the Holy Quran, Islam’s holy book, outside a mosque in Sweden earlier this week during Eid al-Adha celebrations, has been denounced by the Sri Lankan government.
Muslims all around the world are outraged when an Iraqi man named Salwan Momika, who is rumored to reside in Sweden, set fire to a copy of the Qur’an outside Stockholm’s main mosque on Wednesday (June 28).
The government issued a statement on Friday (30 June) stating that “the exercise of the freedom of expression carries with it the responsibility to exercise this right in a manner that respects the rights of others and to ensure that it does not give license to create divisions and hatred based on religion.”
The statement went on to say that all nations and individuals have a responsibility to stop acts of religious intolerance and bigotry that cause polarization among groups in the sake of maintaining national and international peace and harmony.
