Pujith Jayasundara, a former Inspector General of Police (IGP), was present as a petition challenging his acquittal in connection with the 2019 Easter Sunday terrorist attacks was heard by the Supreme Court on Tuesday (04 July).

The Attorney General filed an appeal in an effort to have a Colombo High Court ruling that exonerated the former IGP in a case accusing him of criminal negligence of duty for failing to stop the 2019 attacks despite having access to sufficient intelligence information dismissed.

As a result, the pertinent petition was heard this morning before a five-judge Supreme Court panel presided over by Justice Preethi Padman Surasena.

Former IGP Jayasundara and former Defense Secretary Hemasiri Fernando were detained for allegedly failing to stop the coordinated terror attacks carried out by the now-banned National Thowheed Jamaath (NTJ) on Easter Sunday in 2019, which resulted in over 250 fatalities and about 500 injuries.
