The police officer who killed 17-year-old teen got more donations than the victim’s family

In the wake of the fatal police shooting of Nahel Merzouk, financial support for the victim’s family has reached 352,000 euros ($383,000). At the same time, donations pour in for the implicated police officer. As more than 40,000 individuals have pledged money online, donations received by the police officer surged to 1.47 million euros ($1.6 million).

Nahel Merzouk, a youth of North African descent, was shot at point-blank range by a policeman on 27th June in the Paris suburb of Nanterre. The officer faces a formal investigation for voluntary homicide and has been placed in preliminary detention. Nationwide protests over the police killing have continued to create unrest across France for days.
