According to the Department of Government Information (DGI), the Cabinet of Ministers has given the go-ahead to create a new prison administration law based on a draught created by the Law Reforms Committee, which was constituted by the former justice minister.

According to the DGI, the Law Reforms Committee has prepared a preliminary bill for amending the Prisons Ordinance because it has been determined that certain provisions of the ordinance are not in compliance with the international legal obligations and standards to which Sri Lanka is bound and that they are insufficient for the current needs of the prison system in Sri Lanka.

The proposal made by the Minister of Justice, Prison Affairs, and Constitutional Reforms to advise the legal draughtsman to create a new Prison Administration Bill based on the preliminary bill drafted has thus been approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
