The maximum retail price (MRP) placed on eggs has been lifted by a special gazette announcement from the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA).

On Tuesday (July 25), at midnight, the directive went into force.

The Gazette Extraordinary No. 2328/05, which was published on April 19, 2023 and proclaimed a restricted pricing on eggs, has been revoked in accordance with the communiqué.

The CAA mandated that a white egg be sold for Rs. 44 and a brown egg for Rs. 46 on April 19 of this year. Additionally, the MRP was set at Rs. 880 for a kilogramme of white eggs and Rs. 920 for a kilogramme of brown eggs.

However, after Trade Minister Nalin Fernando stated that eggs imported from India would be sold at Rs. 25 per egg at all Lanka Sathosa outlets starting on Tuesday, the CAA decided to raise the maximum selling price for eggs.
