Water rates will increase as of August 1 as a result of the publication of the Extraordinary Gazette notification regarding the reform of water tariffs.
According to Section 84 of the National Water Supply and Drainage Board Law No. 02 of 1974, the notice was given by Jeevan Thondaman, Minister of Water Supply and State Infrastructure Development.
Based on the quantity of units utilised, this modification has raised water tariffs. However, it is said that this tariff revision does not reflect any rise in the water rates for estate homes and Samurdhi beneficiaries.
In the latest tariff revision, the household water tariff was also raised from Rs. 20 per unit for the first 05 units to Rs. 60 per unit, along with the water rates for all other sectors.
The water rates for public water taps, garden water taps, government hospitals, schools, and places of worship as well as government-approved charities and institutions have all seen price increases as part of this year’s tariff review.
In this version, the monthly service fees were increased in addition to the rate charged for a unit.
The last time the water rates were raised was on September 1st, 2022.
With effect starting on August 1, 2023, customer sewerage fees have also been altered in addition to water rates.
As a result, the following changes have been made to the water tariff:
Domestic use:
0 – 5 unit charge Rs.60 & monthly charge Rs.300
6 – 10 unit charge Rs.80 & monthly charge Rs.300
11 – 15 unit charge Rs.100 & monthly charge Rs.300
