According to Indian Media, Prime Minister Narendra Modi claimed on Thursday that the Congress was responsible for India’s partition and that the Indira Gandhi administration had given the Katchatheevu Island to Sri Lanka in 1974.
According to the Economic Times, both Indian and Sri Lankan fisherman have historically frequented the island, which is situated between Rameswaram (India) and Sri Lanka.
By signing the “Indo-Sri Lankan Maritime Agreement” in 1974, then-prime minister Indira Gandhi recognised Katchatheevu as Sri Lankan territory.
In response to a debate on a motion of no-confidence, the Prime Minister slammed the Congress with the remark, “These people divided mother India into three parts for politics..”
The DMK government in Tamil Nadu, according to PM Modi, writes to him frequently pleading for him to bring Katchatheevu back to India.
“Katchatheevu is an island situated between Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu. Someone transferred it to another nation. Indira Gandhi was in charge when it took place, he claimed.
“Wasn’t that a part of Maa Bharati there?” In an apparent rebuttal to a comment made by Congressman Rahul Gandhi during the debate on Wednesday, Modi posed the question.
