According to the Association of Animal Production, the price of 1 kilogramme of chicken can be sold for Rs. 1,200 in the near future now that the government has taken action to reduce the import duty on maize.
Its chairman, Ajith Gunasekara, expressed optimism that animal feed-producing maize could be imported in two weeks.
He added that as a result of these concessions, it would one day be possible to sell an egg for Rs. 40.
The government declared on Friday, August 18, that the import tax on 1 kilogramme of maize had been lowered from Rs. 75 to Rs. 25.
