Yesterday (Aug. 31), a fundamental rights (FR) petition was submitted to the Supreme Court asking for the appointment of a five-member committee of specialist physicians led by the Director-General of Health Services (DGHS) to carry out an open investigation into patient fatalities and complications brought on by “substandard” drugs imported into Sri Lanka.
The petition was presented by Kavinda Jayawardhana and Harshana Rajakaruna of the main opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), and it named the following individuals as respondents: Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella, DGHS Dr. Asela Gunawardena, National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) and its chairman Prof. S.D. Jayaratne.
