His Excellence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith has pleaded with President Ranil Wickremesinghe and the government to open a ‘free, impartial, just, transparent and broad’ investigation into the alleged plot behind the 2019 Easter Sunday bombings in Sri Lanka, which was revealed in the contentious documentary by British television network Channel 4.

The Archbishop of Colombo stated in a press release today (Sept. 06) that this investigation should be carried out by an independent international investigation team with assistance from all Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officials who were transferred on the basis of political pressure and removed from the investigations into the terror attacks.

Cardinal Ranjith made it clear that the probe should focus on the conclusions indicated in the numerous commission reports that have already been submitted and the recommendations that have not yet been carried out.

Cardinal Ranjith demanded an investigation into those who were alleged in a Channel 4 exposé to have participated in a scheme to sow unrest in the nation and said “their role in this mass murder” should be thoroughly investigated.

Cardinal Ranjith stated that in order to maintain the independence and transparency of these new investigations, all officials in the police and intelligence agencies who are currently under investigation as well as those in top positions should be immediately suspended.
