According to the energy Consumers’ Association, the government is aiming to raise energy rates for a fourth time this year in accordance with the requirements stipulated by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) under its Extended Fund Facility (EFF) for Sri Lanka.

Sanjeewa Dhammika, the association’s national secretary, said they had pleaded with the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) to reject the request for yet another pricing increase.

He claimed that despite the government’s official commitment to raise electricity rates every two years, a third attempt to do so earlier this year was unsuccessful. “Now it’s trying to raise the tariffs for the fourth time.”
