According to Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Labour and Foreign Employment, the country has gained more than US$ 22 million thanks to its electric vehicle (EV) permit programme for migrant workers.

As part of its efforts to offer better benefits to migrant employees with the goal of persuading them to transfer money to Sri Lanka through authorised channels, the Ministry permitted migrant workers to import electrical vehicles.

By September 2023, the Ministry had authorised approximately 200 migrant labourers from Sri Lanka to bring in electrical automobiles.

According to the Ministry of Labour and Foreign Employment, its decision to issue import licences for electric vehicles has been hailed as an original strategy to boost remittances and for its favourable effects on the environment.
