The provision of electricity and its related services, the supply or distribution of petroleum products and fuel, and the provision of healthcare services have all been designated as essential services in a special gazette announcement.
On the orders of President Ranil Wickremesinghe, Acting Presidential Secretary Chandanie Wijayawardhana delivered the announcement on September 17.
According to the President’s authority granted by Section 2 of the Essential Public Services Act No. 61 of 1979, the communiqué was released.
The statement was made a few months after these services were deemed necessary in a Gazette Extraordinary that was released on May 17, 2023.
