Saudi Arabia implements key project to combat blindness in Sri Lanka

Between September 6 and September 16, 2023, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia carried out a volunteer effort to fight blindness in the southern Sri Lankan villages of Walasmulla and the eastern Sri Lankan town of Kattankudy.

The project involves diagnosing a large number of cases, providing medical care to them, classifying cases that require surgical intervention, treatment, and medications, removing cataracts, performing procedures like nail removal and treating tear duct obstruction, giving patients medications, eyeglasses, and contact lenses, while also easing the suffering of many people who are blind, and promoting health awareness for everyone who receives preventive care. Patients were handled in the following ways throughout these campaigns:

“Walasmulla” – Southern part of Sri Lanka:

Medical examinations: 3500

Spectacle distribution: 1050

Surgeries: 531

Kattankudy – Eastern part of Sri Lanka:

Medical examinations: 3500

Spectacle distribution: 1000

Surgeries: 525
