Sri Lanka is moving to enact new laws to strengthen the penalties that can be applied to anyone who post intimate images and videos on social media without permission in an effort to stop sexual harassment.
According to reports, the proposed bill comprising relevant regulations was discussed in a note that Minister of Public Security Tiran Alas gave to the Cabinet of Ministers.
The new legislation are being created to stop the unintentional sharing of intimate images or videos of ex-partners on social media with the aim of frightening, upsetting, or embarrassing them.
A first-time offender will therefore face a maximum sentence of five years in prison or a fine of Rs. 500,000.
