Dr. Ranga Kalansooriya, a media specialist, recently said at a symposium that Google should be held accountable for aiding the Sri Lankan government to enact harsh social media regulations.

16 big giants agreed to the government’s request to wait more than a year before allowing for a tech industry-led self-regulatory system, but Google took more than 15 months to respond, and as of today, there has still been no response, the official continued.

A new Online Safety Bill was gazetted by the Sri Lankan government last week, and it was recently added to the Parliament’s order paper.

Dr. Kalansooriya urged all potential social media users to oppose the Bill in court while speaking at a seminar for social media activists that the United Republic Front’s media wing hosted in Colombo.
