The ‘Amber’ flood warnings issued for the low-lying sections of the Nilwala River, Kuda Ganga, and Gin Ganga have been extended by the Department of Irrigation for an additional 24 hours till 8:30 a.m. on Saturday (Sept. 30).

Flood warnings have therefore been extended for low-lying areas in the Nilwala River valley in the divisional secretariat divisions of Kotapola, Pitabeddara, Akuressa, Pasgoda, Athuraliya, Malimbada, Thihagoda, Matara, and Devinuwara, as well as low-lying areas in the divisional secretariat divisions of Palinda Nuwara and Bulathsinhala.

The flood alert has also been extended for low-lying regions of the Gin Ganga valley located in the divisional secretariat divisions of Welivitiya Divithura, Baddegama, Niyagama, Neluwa, Tawalama, Nagoda, Elpitiya, and Bope Poddala.

Due to heavy rain in several of these river basins’ catchment areas, the flood advisories were originally issued on Thursday, September 28.

It is urged that residents of these locations and drivers going through pay close attention to the current bad weather conditions. Authorities in charge of disaster management have been asked to take the necessary safety measures in the interim.
