Ajith Nivard Cabraal, a former governor of the Central Bank, and Lalith Weeratunga, a former presidential secretary, have been exonerated in the Ven. Thiniyawala Palitha Thero’s lawsuit alleging abuse of public funds.

In addition, the court has dismissed the lawsuit.

When Cabraal served as the Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL), Ven. Palitha Thero filed a personal complaint against the pair, accusing them of misusing public funds.

During his tenure as Central Bank governor between 2006 and 2015, he claimed that Cabraal paid a total of USD 6.5 million to Imaad Zuberi, a Pakistani political donor living in the United States, without first getting the Cabinet’s approval. He claimed that this constituted a criminal breach of trust and an unlawful use of funds.
