In an effort to alert the public and aid in the evacuation, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) is conducting a regional tsunami stimulation exercise today, October 4, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Ajith Rajapakse, the deputy speaker of parliament, yesterday informed the House that the tsunami evacuation programme would be implemented in the districts of Trincomalee, Galle, and Matara to assess the level of readiness of the local coastal populations and students.
It also seeks to assess Sri Lanka’s DMC-established national to village-level tsunami early warning distribution systems.
Major General Sarath Ranasinghe, the director general of the DMC, has asked citizens to maintain their composure because this is just a practise run.
